If you have CIC you can also plug the USB drive into the glove box and copy up to 12gb of files to the internal HDD. Selecting Random playback works the same way my iPhone/iTunes does. While my level of CIC without combox doesn’t support Album Art, Album Art works perfectly on my Wife’s X6. I have no affiliation whatsoever with them, they just came up in a search for software that converts iTunes Lossless to MP3, WAV, AAC, or most any other possible format. The software is “free” with a request to donate and I happily did based on the simplicity of the program and the support. MediaHuman answered a few questions via email and I now have everything working the way I want. I put my entire Album collection, my Standard Playlist and a Christmas Music Playlist on each USB, using 48.5 GB.
I didn't look into it but assume the program converts non iTunes music as well. I used MediaHuman Audio Converter to convert my Apple Lossless iTunes Library to MP3 – Stereo, 44100Hz, 320kbps. I was just curious to test USB music playback since I never have. I haven’t compared audio quality but will, not that I expect to hear much difference. On the 2009 I use an iPhone 3 with the snap in adapter (84-21-2-158-683) but it doesn’t have enough memory for anything but my Playlist, which is almost always fine. No real advantage on my Wife’s X6 since she streams Spotify and her car supports iPhone USB connections and Bluetooth Streaming but if she wants, she can now access my iTunes Library when I’m not with her.

They came already formatted as FAT32 so no external program or command line steps required to utilize the full 64GB. One for my 2009 335i E92 and one for my Wife’s 2016 X6 XDrive 35i F16. I bought a couple SanDisk Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Dives, 64GB. I have the 30 pin Y-cable but have never used it. I ran out of memory on an old iPhone 3 I was using as an iPod for iTunes Playback and thought I'd share the solution I came up with rather than adding a combox or retrofitting with a Lightning Connector Y-Cable to use my iPhone 11 Pro X, if my car supports that.
